Network Monitor
Little Snitch Network Monitor makes Internet connections visible. It shows which application, Unix command or system service (“process”) connects to which Internet server. It also shows where this Internet server is located geographically. And it records statistics for each connection: The amount of data transferred as a function of time for one year, protocols and ports used, etc.
Overview
The Network Monitor window consists of the following components:
- Connections — A hierarchical list of connections that have occurred so far. By default, the unexpanded list shows processes and app groups (e.g. macOS or Simulator). When this level is expanded, you can see helper processes and domains and the last level consists of the servers contacted. The hierarchy of grouping can be configured, though. Instead of Process > Domain > Server you can also choose Domain > Process, Country > Process > Domain > Server and others.
- Search & Filter — You can perform a textual search in the connection list or apply filters for connection direction, coverage by rules and time period.
Learn more about the search and filters… - Toolbar — Contains buttons for sorting, grouping and quickly showing and hiding map and inspector.
- Traffic Chart — The Traffic Chart shows the amount of data up- and downloaded per time unit, as a bar chart over time. A history of up to one year is available.
- Map — Shows geographic locations for the servers in the list. Locations are derived from Internet addresses via databases obtained from MaxMind, Inc, IP2Location, db-ip and Geonames. All required databases are stored on your computer, no online lookups are made.
Learn more about the Map… - Inspector — Shows all the details we know about the selected connections: Internet addresses, other server names, code signature information, geographic location names and other statistics information. It also includes Internet Access Policy information, which, if available, explains the purpose of a process and its connections.
